Many inexperienced hunters are afraid of making a mistake when hunting by stalk. However, buck hunting with this instrument isn't difficult! Markus Lück has compiled the most important tips for stalk hunting.

Equipment

Hectic situations require skilled weapon handling. Hunters should therefore know their leaf-hunting weapon like the back of their hand. Since usually only one shot is required, combination rifles can also be used. A variable scope with 1–6x magnification is ideal. It can be adapted to any leaf-hunting stand and offers a large field of view. Camouflage clothing is mandatory for ground stands. Especially, camouflage of the hands and face must not be forgotten. Binoculars are not necessary. The stag is approached via the scope. Seat stick or seat pack.

Choice of instrument

For beginners to leaf hunting, the Buttolo deer leafer is particularly recommended. By pressing the "rubber ball," the hunter always produces the correct sound. Not much can go wrong with this. A much wider variety of musical options can be achieved with leafers that are operated by mouth. However, it is always advisable to practice at home beforehand.

Time

The roe deer rut takes place from mid-July to mid-August, depending on the weather and the location of the hunting area. Generally, rutting can occur throughout the entire rut. However, it's only at the end of the rut that the older bucks are alone again and ready to bleat. The best chances for rutting are from August 6th to about 15th. Rutting can occur throughout the day. Only dusk should be avoided, as sufficient daylight is needed to attract the approaching buck.

Seat selection

While in a stand, the game moves toward the hunter, in a stand, the hunter must approach the game. Therefore, they position themselves close to the suspected hiding place. In forests, locations near thickets, regeneration clumps, and plantations are the first choice. In field areas, the hunter should position themselves near hedges, copses, or cornfields. A good overview is essential. There should be an area of at least 70 meters between the stand and the suspected hiding place, in which a shot can be safely taken. The most exciting hunting experience comes from a stand. Of course, stalking can also be done from driven hunt stands, ladder stands, or blinds. Elevated positions have the advantage of placing the hunter out of sight of the game. However, in blinds, the important all-round view is often missing, because the buck can approach from any direction.

Behavior at the stand

The gun must be loaded on the way to the stand. Bucks are very active during the rut. Therefore, contact with game must always be expected. The hunter should have their gun in their hand no later than when the music begins. 15 minutes after taking up the stand, the hunter begins leafing. If no buck responds to the "Pia" series, the hunter adds further attraction to the squeaking sounds with rustling leaves and cracking branches. The hunter should remain as quiet as possible in the stand. Some bucks stand like ghosts. Any movements by the hunter would then be immediately noticeable. If no buck responds after a total of 30 minutes of leafing, the stand is changed.
